Tonight we remember our beautiful mother, Kathleen Mary McParland Maurer, born April 30, 1932, who left us on March 1, 2003.

Mom was the loving wife of Alphonse Maurer and the proud mother of six — Danny , Jimmy, (Jeanie), Jerry (Rose), Marie (Jim Blough), Diane (Roger Brening), and Susan (Pat Hurley). Our family was often described as the “Brady Bunch” of Cabrini Parish in Allen Park — three boys followed by three girls — raised in a small home filled with faith, laughter, music, and unconditional love.

She was the daughter of Margaret Ferguson and Francis McParland. Grandma Margaret bravely left Ireland in her early twenties, journeyed to Toronto with her sister Bertha, and later settled in Detroit after meeting Grandpa Francis, one of Ford’s early five-dollar-a-day workers. That courage, strength, and devotion to family became Mom’s foundation.

Mom began her career as a secretary, even working glamorous positions at the FBI and Ford Motor Company where her shorthand skills were admired — a true lost art. When I was born, she made the decision to become a full-time mother, dedicating herself completely to raising the six of us until Susie was in 7th grade. She reentered the workforce at the local school district, but her greatest life’s work was always her family.

She sent us off to school every day with the same words: “Study hard,” followed by a big hug and a kiss. Those simple words still echo in our hearts.

Though we didn’t have much money, Mom and Dad gave us a childhood rich in experiences — especially the countless trips in the motorhome Dad bought in the early 70s. We saw the country together, learned together, and grew closer together.

Mom was a kind and generous spirit who filled our home with music. She played the piano and organ beautifully and later, with a sparkle in her eye, would play the accordion at the local bar on St. Patrick’s Day — proud of her Irish roots and her membership in the Irish American Club. She also loved her card clubs and the friendships that sustained her throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Frank, and survived by her other three brothers Jack (Elenor), Gerald (Judy), and Jim (Pat). She leaves behind her ten grandchildren — Rachael, Amanda, Ryan, Danny, Andrea, Collin, Allison, Shane, Kathleen and Conner— along with many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews who were blessed by her warmth.

Mom taught us faith at Cabrini Parish, resilience from her immigrant roots, devotion to family, and the power of kindness in everyday life. She showed us that love is not measured by money, but by presence, sacrifice, music in the living room, road trips in a motorhome, and hugs at the front door each morning.

We miss her still.
We carry her always.
And tonight, we honor the remarkable woman who made our house a home.

Love you, Mom. Jimmy and “ChatGPT”  Mom…. you wont believe what technology does now!!!

Jimmy - Remembering Mom 2026

Mom

She was always a mother to me, in every sense of the word… Especially after my own mother died.

Mom, I miss you. I really do. I just found my letter from last year. I had quickly written it but never published it. At least I wrote it! I was worried I’d forgotten entirely.

2025 flew by in a blur, totally wrapped up with my job. The GM culture is changing. They are constantly ranking and pitting employees against each other, and letting people and even whole departments go. On top of that, the way we architect our controls and software is being completely overhauled, leading to demanding deadlines. It really got in my head. I wasn’t terribly worried, but it felt unfair and unnerving to imagine GM letting me go before I hit my 85-point pension day. It didn’t help to have a boss who seemed to care more about himself than his direct reports. I was constantly stressed out.

But I made it! December 8, 2025, was my 85-point day, which means subsidized healthcare in retirement. I will officially retire April 1, 2026. I don’t think I’ll look for another job, but it sure feels crazy not making money. A part-time remote job would be nice to keep my mind sharp, but with today’s interview circus, that’s basically impossible.

I have to admit, I’m a little unsure about having zero obligations. It’s weird not having something to chase. I keep thinking about you and your ticker tape hobby as you looked for your next stock to buy. I’m planning to exercise more, play some pickleball, plan trips, actually try to cook meals for two that don’t involve cereal, and maybe watch the market a bit more. I hope I can learn to enjoy figuring out what my “ticker” will be. Thanks for setting an example to always view life with a smile and happy tune.

Love

Susie

2025 Letter from Susie

 Hello Mom,

I am in Pennsylvania at a robotics competition and almost forgot it was March 1st. I am glad I remembered because I want to continue this tradition of writing to you.

I just wanted to say I am thinking about you today.

Love Susie

 Dear Mom,

As I sit down to write these words, I'm overwhelmed by a flood of memories and emotions.  It's been 21 years since you left us, yet I still have very vivid memories of you.

You had a gift for making people smile, for filling time with a song and for offering a helping hand to those in need. Your presence filled our home with warmth and laughter, creating cherished memories that are still very comforting to me.

I know you experienced the roller coaster of events and emotions that being a mom brings. From the highs of laughter and joy to the lows of worry and exhaustion, you did your best to navigate and accept each of us as individuals. Letting kids grow and find their way requires a lot of patience and love. I wish we would have been able to share that cuppa tea and trade stories.

My kids are good. Finding their independence and becoming adults. Collin is still at Ford and living in Ann Arbor, Allison moved to Portland, OR and seems to like her job at Nike and Shane is finishing up his 2nd year at Kettering.

Right now I am filled with respect, appreciation and love for you and dad. Wish you were both here with me.

Love,

Susie

to me

Mom,

Wow. 20 years. They say that time heals all pain, but I am not so sure for every time I think of you, I miss you more and more. Sure, as time passed it has gotten easier and there are not so many tears but more fond memories, your voice in head guiding me and helping thru good and difficult times. I have a beautiful family in which I am very proud of, and they bring so much joy to Jim and me.

Jim and I will be celebrating 35years this year. And I have to say it’s been a wonderful/challenging ride. Ryan joined the Air Force for six years and now works for General Motors. He is married to a beautiful lady (Victoria) and we now have two beautiful grandchildren (Hayden 13 ½ and Sofia 5) that are our pride/joy. Jim retired and has been watching our little Sofia for the past 5 years. We are truly blessed that we get to see Sofia almost every day and Hayden as often as we can. Since, the pandemic I have been working from home and I am looking at the possibility of retiring in May 2024 (maybe), (God willing and if I do retire, I know God will provide). Andrea, graduated for college and is making her way thru the crazy world we live in. She is living in Florida, works at Disney World (she is my Disney girl, just like our Sofia ) and Top Golf, has a doggy and loving her life. She works very hard and many long hours but enjoys what she is doing thus far.

Miss you mom, Love you mom. Both you and dad are

Always on my mind, forever in my Heart.

2023 letter from Susie

Mom,
Twenty years ago today…My eyes are filled with tears and my heart is so heavy.
You brought the cheer, the laughs, the music, and the love.  Miss you every day.
It was another big year. Big trip to Greece, Collin bought a house, Shane graduated and started college, Allison is moving to Oregon and we bought a newer motorhome.
Wish you were here to share stories.
Keep watching over us.

Love
Susie

I can't believe it has been 19 years. We are now entering year 3 of this pandemic, and I wish you were here to fill with advice to keep going. I know that you inspire me to try to seek the best in people.

I am happy to report that your great granddaughter is benefiting from all your cabrini window funding. Amelia is currently in preschool there. Tomorrow we are joining her for Ash Wednesday mass.

Missing you often, but know you are watching over us.

Letter From Susie(2022)

Dear Mom,

It has been another strange year totaling two full years living with the Covid pandemic. Vaccines, boosters, masks and social distancing allowed our family to avoid the worst variants of this virus.  In Jan. 2022 Pat and I attended the funeral in WV of his first cousin Christie(50yrs old). The Omicron variant was running rampant, but being vaccinated and knowing this variant was not as dangerous we decided to attend in person. Not too surprising that all the Hurley relatives ended up getting Covid(we even brought it home to our kids). Happy to report everyone was boosted and it was not much more than a bad cold. Even Shane(who was having many stomach related issues this year) had only a fever for 2 days and a cough. Today the Covid cases are much lower and many states have lifted the mask restrictions. It feels like we are getting back to normal. Why not just add a war into the mix(Russia is invading the Ukraine).

Today is Mardi Gras, March 1st 2022.  I had Shane get some donuts on his way home from school to celebrate.  Robotics is in full swing this year, wearing masks during meetings. I am not a mentor this year. I decided to find some new/old hobbies to enjoy. I am playing volleyball with Allison on Tuesday nights and I have found a Pickleball league to join. Allison plans to move out of our house this month and live with 2 of her friends near Royal Oak.  Yes I am very sad for me, but happy for her.  Collin is living at home raking in the money. He has hopes of buying a house, but he is just not sure where. Some memorable activities we did over 2021: 1. Worked from home in Florida -- drove our camper and stayed at a VRBO house with Mimi and Papa and Heather's family. 2. Holland Tulip Festival 3. Glacier National Park and Yellowstone with Allison and her friend Nora 4. Summer camping trips in Michigan.5. Allison and I took a trip to CO to visit Diane and see her new Cabin.

As I write this I am feeling a bit lost in the unavoidable changes that are on the horizon. Allison is moving in 25 days, Collin will be leaving shortly, Shane will be graduating and heading to college- Kettering? and Ruby is 13 and is starting to decline. My big house will be empty! Time to plan for new adventures.

Love you and miss you,
Susie

Remembering Mom Jim -2021

Remembering Mom 2021

Mom just wanted to touch base with you.  Hope you are getting these memories and thoughts from your family.  We all miss you and frequently think of you and the good times, but this day is an opportunity for your family to get together and remember you.

It has been a crazy year due to the worldwide COVID 19 Pandemic. I never thought I would see the entire US economy shut down for several weeks, but it died last summer in 2020.  The streets were almost empty as the US government issued a stay-at-home order to try and stop the spread of the COVID-19 disease.  It is now Feb 28, 2021 and almost one year later and things are just begging to return to normal.  The entire world came together to fight the pandemic and there have been major medical breakthrough with a new type of vaccine development process that allowed shortened the development time, but there is a need of 7+ billion people to be inoculated and this will take some time before this virus is fully / mostly eradicated.  A sad historical note: the US death toll recently passed 500,000 due to the pandemic, a historic moment in this country's history.  Fortunately, our immediate family has been mostly spared the virus, Jerry, Rose, Amanda contracted the virus and fought it off and we hope and pray they are fully recovered soon.  The rest of the family has been following the health guidelines of wearing the Mask over Nose and mouth when in public and trying to maintain 6 feet social distance from others.  We are beginning to see the end of this tragedy and look forward to each of us receiving the vaccine and return to normalcy here in the US this summer.

Your Grandchildren Rachel and Dan are doing great.  Rachel/ Ben and Johnny/ Ethan recently moved to Colorado Springs and have a lovely home close to Pike Peak and Jeanie, and I look forward to our visits to resume soon.  Dan is working in the film industry in Los Angeles and enjoying his successful career in the audio recording Movie/TV industry.

In 2019 I had open heart surgery to repair a valve.   Having to think about how you had similar surgery about the same age brings tears to my eyes as I know how tough that is to go through and only wish I could have been there more for you during that time.

I was able to retire from Honeywell March of 2020, a little later than I had planned but really am enjoying being retired and after 40+ years at Honeywell don't miss work one bit!  Thanks for all you did for me to enable me to have a successful life, and enjoy my brothers/ sisters, marriage, career, children & grandchildren!

Rachel asked me to work on documenting some memories now that I am retired, she arranged a StoryWorth website to capture stories from my childhood, last week  topic was:

What was your Mom like when you were a child?

In short …. Mom was a  " Mom's Mom" , the female equivalent of a Man's Man!  She was about family, God & Country and…. what will the neighbors think!

Family was her life, raising and taking care of 6 children who were often sparing with each other emotionally and physically, she was the official household referee. When she had time she would sing, play piano or the organ or read newspapers and Readers Digest magazines.  She always put her kids first, weather that was time, health, emotionally or financially. She was remarkably close with her family, mother/father, aunts, uncles and brothers and sisters this gave us kids a strong sense of family.  She was a good cook and enjoyed baking occasionally. Traditional Irish Soda Bread and German Bread were often special treats enjoyed by all of us.  Mom was thoughtful, considerate and kind to all and encouraged us to be the same.  Later in life when I was a teenager she was engaged with my friends and welcomed them into our family like her own children.

When we went on Motorhome trips she would read the AAA TripTik that provided historical facts and information along our route to wherever we were going.  Mom would bust out a tune whenever/wherever she felt the urge, often at the Piano in the basement while doing laundry or at the Organ in the living room after dinner.   A few songs I recall singing along with Mom Yellow Bird, How Much is that Doggy in the window, John Jacob Jingle-Heimer-Smidt and other Sound of Music tunes.  Mom was very proficient in shorthand writing (method of taking dictation with symbols rather than letters) and at the time was a skill very much in demand.  Mom was a great had great vocabulary and a good speller who took a keen interest in the Latin root meaning of words. She worked as a secretary at the Ford Executive offices and even worked for the local FBI.

Every Morning she would see us kids off to school with a Kiss and "Study Hard" reminder.  Other Mom sayings I recall are "Just do your Best" and "Study Hard" and God sees everything so you don't need to brag about any good deeds you may have done or do the right thing even if nobody is watching!  Other comments I would also hear from Mom was "Fun comes to Harm" when the Boys were wrestling or roughhousing as she would call it around the house.

Mom or Kathy short for Kathleen AKA "Kadiddlehopper" as my dad sometimes referred to her put her family first and gave all of herself to raising a family.

 Love Jimmy.
